EAFI 2005 International Multi-Cultural Exchange Summer Program

The EAFI 2005 summer Program is from July 7 to August 10th, 2005. The approximate length of the trip is 35 days with a planned arrival on July 7th, 2005 in Beijing, China and departure from Shanghai on August 10th, 2005.

Goal
The goal of the summer program is to promote cultural tolerance among different nationalities and minorities. Chinese classes will be provided for all international participants with individualized needs.

Beijing Children Center Summer Fun (July 7 - July 11)
International volunteers will have interactive fun with Beijing children, some of whom are muslim children. Some kind of siteseeing activities and home stay will be arranged for volunteers.

Jishou International Cultural Exchange Summer camp (July 12th - July 23th, 2005)
Students and Faulty from different Chinese nationalities and international communities will gather in Jishou to celebrate the opening of rural minority women's Training School. The morning hours will involve international students teaching English to minority students while the afternoon focuses on cultural activities. All participants will learn cultural tolerance. Some people from Hawaii will come to demostrate the Aloha spirit through music, dance and crafts. International students and teachers will have opportunities to visit Miao and Tu Jia minority villages and museums to experience traditional Miao and Tu Jia cultures as they develop an understanding of China's ethnic and cultural diversity. The group will also visit orphanages and local institutions to help build local non government organizations. Home stay will be provided for those who are interested.

Yunnan International English Camp (July 25- August 5,2005)
International students will have opportunities to visit different minority villages to experience traditional minority cultures bordering on Viet Nam, Laos, Myanmar and Tibet as they develop an understanding of China's ethnic and cultural diversity. All participants will teach English to local minority students while learning local culture and Chinese language. Students can take the beautiful train ride to Kunmin.

Shanghai (August 5-10th)
Visit rapid development in Shanghai and Visit a Chinese family in Shanghai;
Work with Chinese NGOS: Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation and Children Fund;

Program Highlights
* Mandarin language training
* Work Study in a part of China that is part of China's western minority region helping minority students to improve their English
* Interdisciplinary Seminar on Chinese life and culture
* Sightseeing in Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan, Xingjiang, the silk road, and Zhang Jiajie, the most beautiful mountain reserve in China.
* Study Tours to Uigurs, Miao, and Tu Jia villages;

* Independent Study Project (students can make arrangements with their school professors in social sciences, agricultural sciences, and Chinese language for credits)
Cost for international students:
Round-trip International Airfare: $800-$1000 (varies).
Domestic flight: $600
Application and a three month visa fees: $120
Tour Site Entrance Fees: $100 (pay upon arrival in Beijing).
Hotel Accommodation and food: $550
Requirements:
All participants must take Hepatitis A and B immunization shots.
The health insurance for the participants must be valid for overseas' hospitalizations and physician care.
All participants must sign a release form.
A limited amount of scholarships are available for those students in need.
