Leadership Training

Kids in Hunan

Teaching Western Civilization for Secondary School Teachers Education Advancement Fund International and Teachers College, Jishou University, Hunan China are pleased to announce a ten year project to train 20,000 K-12 teachers in the region. The first phase of the program (starting Spring 2003) is to help to raise the English level of the teachers. The second phase, which will begin in 2004, focuses on teaching "Western Civilization" for teachers in West Hunan province.

The project was approved by the local government. The project will help to improve understanding between the West and China. Chinese teachers will have a more positive attitude towards constitutional democracy and free enterprises. Since this is the birth province of Mao and many other Chinese leaders, we can help future Chinese leaders to understand the U.S. and the West. This will feature a series of lectures by leading scholars in several fields.

This program is specially designed for secondary school teachers and curriculum supervisors. Our aim is to enrich teachers' understanding of Western societies -- from ancient times to the 21st century -- covering history, culture, politics, society, economics, entrepreneurship, and foreign relations. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to interact with nationally known scholars in the Western and American studies and will be provided with information on high-quality instructional materials to help translate the six-month experience directly into the classroom.

Topics and speakers include:

  • American and English Literature
  • Pre-modern Western History
  • History of Christianity
  • Modern Western History
  • Entrepreneurship in the US
  • American History
  • History of Science and Technology in the West
